Write for us

Active Theatre Journal welcomes clear, original contributions about the work of making amateur theatre. Bring a specific question, decision or process into focus, and make the piece useful to readers who may be working in different circumstances.

What to pitch

We consider pitches about playmaking, rehearsal, direction, design and production. Strong proposals explain the subject, the reader it serves, the main point and what the finished piece would help someone understand or decide. Comparisons, explainers and reflective accounts can all work when they stay focused and offer concrete detail.

What makes a good contribution

Use plain language, separate personal experience from general claims and be specific about the limits of any advice. Do not invent facts, credentials or results, and do not include material you do not have permission to share. We are not seeking disguised advertising or claims that one approach guarantees a successful show.

How to send a proposal

Send a short pitch through the Contact page, choosing the editorial question option and describing the proposed topic, angle and intended reader. A pitch is not a commission; wait for a reply before sending a complete piece. Include any relevant interests that could affect how readers understand the contribution.
