Active Theatre Journal

About

Active Theatre Journal is about making theatre with the people, time and resources a group has. We cover the choices that carry a production from an initial idea to a performance, without treating one method as right for every group.

What we cover

Our subjects include selecting and preparing scripts, planning rehearsals, directing scenes, using space and design, and coordinating a production. We focus on decisions that can be understood, discussed and adapted to a group's particular work.

Who it is for

The publication is for amateur performers, directors, writers, designers, organisers and curious audience members. You do not need a job title or specialist vocabulary to use it; the aim is to make the work easier to think through.

How we approach it

We explain the purpose behind a choice, compare options where useful and name the trade-offs. Suggestions are prompts for a group's own judgement, not rules or guarantees. We avoid assuming every production has the same cast, space, schedule or budget.
